How to make the EHDS successful? An industry perspective | János Vincze
European success with the EHDS will come through medical innovation. Janos explored Europe’s strengths and weaknesses as an innovation centre. A set of European projects have already provided a snowball of standards innovation for the European EHR eXchange Format (EEHRxF). Upscaling is certainly needed. However, simply being standards-based is not enough. There are several key tasks: conformance testing; product compliance; and product integration. If done well, the EHDS is a golden opportunity to introduce new products.
The HL7 Europe Imaging Study FHIR IG and how to contribute
In this webinar, HL7 Europe speakers discuss the HL7 Europe Imaging Study Report FHIR Implementation Guide (one of the four IGs in open for review) and how it relates to other relevant imaging standards (including Dicom, IHE profiles and others). They also introduce HL7’s collaborative platforms like Jira and Confluence, and walk through specifically HL7 Europe’s mechanisms for participation and contribution for all stakeholders. Finally, they discuss why and how HL7 Europe’s IGs matter for the European Health Data Space.
The HL7 International WGM in May in Madrid, and Europe’s contribution
In this webinar, HL7 Europe speakers discuss the HL7 Europe Imaging Study Report FHIR Implementation Guide (one of the four IGs in open for review) and how it relates to other relevant imaging standards (including Dicom, IHE profiles and others). They also introduce HL7’s collaborative platforms like Jira and Confluence, and walk through specifically HL7 Europe’s mechanisms for participation and contribution for all stakeholders. Fianlly, they discuss why and how HL7 Europe’s IGs matter for the European Health Data Space.
Implementing HL7 FHIR in laboratory systems under the EHDS: observations from Spain
With its 18 regional healthcare systems, the experience of Spain in connecting diverse healthcare systems may offer some instructive lessons for the rest of Europe. With more than 90 percent of its citizens having access to their patient summaries, Spain is among the more digitally advanced EU Member States. Spain also played a significant role in shaping the EHDS regulation to ensure its provisions are realistic and manageable for providers and manufacturers during its Presidency of the EU Council.
The HL7 Europe Medication, Prescription and Dispense FHIR IG and its alignment with Xt-EHR
Robust standards and specifications require the collaboration and input of all stakeholders, and the EHDS is no exception. Xt-EHR and HL7 Europe have both launched consultations to their communities, on topics that may partly overlap. In this webinar, speakers discussed how HL7 Europe and Xt-EHR are working together on the HL7 FHIR Implementation Guides, how the Xt-EHR logical model have been used as input for this work, and how to respond to the open consultations.
Buying Innovation: The Format (EEHRxF)
On 30 June 2025, xShare project hosted the webinar “Buying Innovation: The Format (EEHRxF)”. The aim of the session was to explore how procurement can become a key driver of innovation and interoperability in the context of the European Health Data Space (EHDS), with particular attention to the European Electronic Health Record Exchange Format (EEHRxF). Experts from across Europe shared their experiences, challenges, and strategies for transforming procurement from a bureaucratic task into a strategic tool.
Leveraging the EHDS: advancing public health and citizen impact
This presentation presents the daily life of a public health institute in a single country – Sciensano in Belgium. The discussion explores what is being done now to push more quality data to the health data agencies, what are the priority actions for Member States, if EHDS deployment will provide citizens with the opportunity to participate in adding to public health knowledge and tackling unsolved challenges.
Does research need to get data directly from people?
The EHDS provides interesting links between the both primary and secondary uses of health data. The right of individuals to have full control to their data will create a paradigm shift for researchers since they may acquire direct access to individuals and ask them for their data. One opportunity lies in assessing the feasibility of particular research protocols. This presentation explores six reasons why today the websites of clinical studies and clinical trials are “overwhelmed … hence, recruitment delays occur”.
The 1st EHDS Adoption Kit Webinar for Citizens
This webinar presents how the European Health Data Space (EHDS), the European Electronic Health Record Exchange Format (EEHRxF) and the xShare Yellow Button are putting citizens / patients in control of their health data.
Better Connecting Primary AndSecondary Use Of Data For Additional Societal Value
This webinar presents an in-depth discussion on advancing the European Health Data Space (EHDS) through the integration and secondary use of electronic health data, focusing on bridging primary care data capture and secondary applications like public health and clinical research.
