On February 11, 2025, the European Parliament and the Council adopted Regulation (EU) 2025/327, establishing the European Health Data Space (EHDS). This landmark regulation aims to enhance individuals’ access to and control over their electronic health data, facilitating its use for healthcare delivery, research, innovation, policy-making, and more, thereby strengthening the European Health Union.

Key objectives of the EHDS

  • The EHDS ensures that individuals can seamlessly access and manage their personal health data, promoting transparency and patient autonomy.
  • Beyond primary healthcare purposes, the EHDS enables the use of health data for research, innovation, public health, and policy development, all under strict data protection measures.
  • A significant focus is placed on the interoperability of electronic health record (EHR) systems across EU member states, ensuring that health data can be securely and efficiently exchanged.

xShare project paving the way for EHDS implementation

Aligned with the EHDS’s vision, the xShare project envisions effortless sharing of health data in the European Electronic Health Record Exchange Format (EEHRxF) through the xShare Yellow Button. This feature, integrated into health portals and patient apps, will enable individuals to exercise their data portability rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Aligning with EHDS developments

The xShare Yellow Button empowers individuals to share their health data seamlessly, aligning with the EHDS’s goal of enhancing personal access and control over health information.

By promoting the adoption of the EEHRxF, xShare ensures that shared health data is in a standardised, harmonized format, supporting the EHDS’s emphasis on interoperable EHR systems.

Moreover, the project fosters a culture of data sharing, which can significantly boost research and innovation, key components of the EHDS framework.

Last but not least, xShare actively collaborates with industry, government, academia, and society, creating synergies that support the EHDS’s implementation and sustainability.

The xShare project operationalises the EHDS’s objectives by providing practical tools and frameworks that facilitate secure, interoperable, and user-friendly health data sharing across Europe.
