xShare project held the workshop Towards individual’s empowerment over own health data: The role of the European EHRxF on 27 June at Madeira Digital Transformation Summit in Funchal. Led by Maria Marques (UNINOVA), the workshop explored mechanisms for secure health data sharing via the xShare Yellow Button.
The workshop started with an introduction to the EHRxF by colleagues from the sister project XpanDH. Session chair Maria Marques kicked off the xShare session, introducing the project with its two driving engines: the EHRxF Standards and Policy Hub and the xShare Yellow Button. She then went on to present the button and its mission: enabling citizens to share their health data in the EHRxF with a click-of-a-button. Maria then introduced the adoption site concept and their shared goal to move from their current status towards button implementation.
Representatives from 6 adoption sites then presented their current status and challenges, showcasing the reality of xShare Yellow Button implementation across settings.
Showcasing adoption sites on national level, Michael Johnson (MedCom) presented the Danish adoption site, explaining the planned button integration into the existing patient portal and app.
Alexander Berler (Gnomon) continued presenting the Greek adoption site (via IDIKA) and its plans to map the Greek system to the EHRxF.
Theodoros Solomou (University of Cyprus) presented the Cypriot adoption site, working towards enabling EHR data sharing with all relevant healthcare organisations.
John O’Neill (HSE) spoke about the progress in Ireland, on cross-border sharing and robust content management system.
Representing the regional perspective, Andreia Pimenta (SRS) showcased the adoption site in Madeira, and their plans to make health information portable via the yellow button.
Charlotte Cameli (Telemed Technologies) presented an industrial adoption site, focussed on using the xShare button for clinical trial recruitment.
Vasco Delgado-Gomes (UNINOVA) conducted an interactive exercise, eliciting participants’ perception regarding the prioritisation of the Health Information Domains and the xShare Yellow Button basic functionalities. The existing xShare Yellow Button requirements were prioritised, and new ones were elicited by the audience. Lastly, additional feedback was collected regarding the Hospital Information Systems and its level of integration.
Finally, Maria Marques (UNINOVA), wrapped up and concluded the WS highlighting that despite the differences in the strategies and challenges faced by each Adoption Site, there is a great common understanding of its benefits as well as common requirements that can be generalised. Specific requirements of each Adoption Site must be analysed in order to guarantee their alignment with the project objectives and the EHDS regulation.
